All of the confusion starts with the Local 600, and they won't change it. It is the ambiguity of the positions allows them to keep control of it within IATSE. The position is a major point of contention between the various locals. Local 700 Claims that it is covered by the COLORIST and ASSISTANT COLORIST positions. Local 695 says that the position is covered by VIDEO TECH. If you look at the "verbiage" for each of these positions, various aspects apply to all of them. In reality, a good portion of the DITs (who aren't doing real-time color between camera and monitor) are doing the same exact work that non-union techs are doing at places like Fotokem.
The problem is that instead of the Locals coming to an agreement, they continue to leave it vague so that they all have a claim on it. The bottom line should be that we are IATSE and the local shouldn't matter as much.
I'm one of the few that would rather see DIT go to the 700. (Editorial union) In the end, a larger percentage of the work being done is for the editor. The preparation of the material, the workflow, etc. I think that they position of DIT should be EXCLUSIVELY the act of doing real time grading an image evaluation on set. Once the image is recorded and saved, it should go to another union. A Union that has a better understanding of the needs of editorial and post. I realize the whole "agent of the Cinematographer" thing comes into play. But I'd answer that with the fact that the DI colorist is the MOST influential in the final image the DP puts to screen. They are in 700.
I just know that when I call 600 to ask them about ANYthing technical, they really don't have answers. Most of them don't really have any clue what happens after the light goes through the lens. As a result, I think that is where their jurisdiction should end as well.
That is my humble opinion, but I am also someone dealing with this gray area everyday.
The resolution may be higher, but the Pixel Density is nearly the same as the original Alexa. Resolution isn't what denotes "quality" when you talk about detail. The affect on the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes in the Alexa 65 will be just about the same as Alexa.
