Remembering No Film School's Dave Kendricken
8 years ago
I am very sad to hear of this. I seem to recall he was a Doctor Who fan, which both surprised and resonated with me. I admire people like him as you describe, and can only take inspiration with melancholy from this. Please accept my condolences to his family and friends.

A Primer on Focal Length: Why Lenses Are One of the Most Powerful Tools at Our Disposal

This is what confuses me:-

Whenever I see a film, no one's face seems particularly distorted, yet for close-ups, mid-range, wide shots etc, I'm assuming all sorts of lenses are used. Or do most directors just use a 50mm lens and move forwards and backwards accordingly ? I'd be grateful if someone could explain more.
Hi, S.M.
Yes, I guess when the Taliban have a shooting schedule they mean something a bit different. I am an ethnic Pakistani living in the UK. I guess you are a Pathan somewhere in the North-West province. Do you travel much or have any friends in other areas ? If you do some level of pre-production, then get over to Lahore or similar and hit your project in a short schedule, then quiet post behind closed doors. Maybe that could work. Low budget, low key. Otherwise friends, greenscreen and download Fusion (!).
I think countries everywhere are getting more security minded - my school day trip to France as child, or the weekend I once had in Paris might have to be rethought today. I dare say if I went to public parts of London with a camera, I'd get questioned, and I would love to visit the U.S. one day, but I'm sure there would be a chunk of questions to answer ("What do you mean you want to attend NAB just to look around ?").
I do sympathise with you, but Pakistan does have a rich culture of performance art, perhaps more in theatre than cinema at the moment, but you have to find it. Even in the UK there are villages, and the chances of success for someone in film-making are perhaps increased by being more connected in London or Cardiff or similar, if you know what I mean.
I love Pakistan and admire and respect you in your vision, wishing you every success in maybe being that one guy who changes the outside perception of the country, armed only with a camera. Best.
