I have some of the small condenser 'area' mics (i.e., Beyerdynamic mpc22) used for table discussions for business etc. In setting these up in a perimeter in front of a green screen or background with a locked camera, the talent can move freely and capture sound from any position. A shotgun overhead is still used, but the worry about not capturing something is greatly reduced.
