I also wouldn't call these lies. Being self taught and a very amateurish film maker, I try and learn as much as possible! It all depends on what you're striving for. For a few years I used Premier Pro and after a while, I just got rid of it and now use Premier Elements. Why would I ever do that if I know how to use Pro?! Simplicity. I don't need all the bells and whistles. I don't make video's to be seen in a theater but only on a little computer screen. I also don't do crazy special effects so no need for After Effects either.
Story is what you should strive for and all the best equipment won't help that.
I would say know what you're going for and learn that.
I agree that 4K isn't necessary, but it is useful for adventurer/extreme sports because later in editing, you can cut it down or reframe shots and still be in HD.
