Lego Movie 2 flopped, just like BOP.
"Right off the bat, it seems a bit sexist to label a female-driven comic book film a flop". Absolute nonsense. If a movie is in the red, it's in the red, end of... regardless of cast and crew.
Btw, Chad Stahelski was called in for reshoots as the studio wasn't happy with Cathy Yen's final product. Chad directed most of the action scenes seen in the final movie. I actually find it sexist that this is never mentioned in all of these ill informed articles.
I would suggest calculating box office success like this:
50% domestic gross + 40% overseas gross (excluding China) + 25% China gross (not applicable to this movie) minus the production budget.
If that number is negative (which it currently is, at $-19 million according to my calculations) then it hasn't made its production budget back. That's how you know when a film fails or not.
Making at or over 2/3rds its production budget in addition back is usually a good sign of a financial success. Which given the CinemaScore, it won't make that back.
It flopped. Basic mathematics. Fact.
