I also keep seeing people recommend the Saramonic Smartrig ($30) or Smartrig + ($100), which is basically a 9v-powered preamp that converts your XLR audio to 1/8" pretty cleanly. The only issue with the cheaper one is that you need to convert the TRRS output (cell phone-style cable with 4 connectors) to TRS ('normal' headphone jack).
That said, I agree with the poster above; an external recorder like a Zoom or Tascam will work if you can deal with dual system sound. I don't think your t5i has a headphone jack or any audio levels (without stopping recording and jumping into a menu), so it's definitely a guessing game. Yes, the Smartrig has a headphone jack, but you're not monitoring what your camera is recording, so good luck.
Also, I agree; 1/8" connectors are super flimsy. If you at least get one with a right-angle connector, it'll sit fairly flush with the camera body and be less likely to get stressed.
*I haven't used either*, but as someone who's used a DR-40 for a long time, the one time I've preferred that H4N form factor is in crazy run-and-gun situations, where I could throw a Redhead windscreen on it and handhold/boom mount the recorder and use the built-in mics without needing an XLR cable connected to the tripod/monopod
If you put a small piece of tape at the top-back of the light and extending down to the door, you can make an easy hinge so you don't have to worry about losing the door.
*works well with an NP-F550, but not so well with a 750

I literally thought, "wow, that rig looks just like the one Caleb Pike just posted; I wonder what Wooden Camera is charging for it."
I agree on the 50mm f1.8 as a first 'upgrade' lens.
Another suggestion, though, if you can stretch your budget about 50 bucks, is the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (non image-stabilized version). not quite the 'dreamy' shallow depth of field as the prime, but you get a lot of flexibility with a fast zoom, and having a variety of focal lengths can really make your life easier/give you a product you're happy with. I use that lens all the time.
