I don't like fame because of the people, but.... the location is great, they still do 16mm films and beer is cheap in Prague :)...and the quality differs across departments

You've made the right point once you had watched these movies they can influence you. And it`s not a bad thing if you don't blindly copy!
Me as a film studies student I'd say that you should watch these movies. It helps you understand a bit more to the film (history). If you like fast editing and jumpsuits it all leads to soviet cinema of 20s.
The answer is quite simple - you have to answer yourself if you need 4K and slow-mo? if not go for BMPCC and tons of batteries
I can agree he could have push it more. But why into narative based things? I appreciated that it wasn't narrative at all(or manimal narrative if you want).
