I'm a teacher of Physics who also sponsor's our High School Film Club. (also just recently finished an MBA in film; with some production classes.) We meet 1 time a week. This year we've started doing what Charles suggested. I'll give the students some parameter to frame their short story around: a one shot; a parallel edit; a flashback; ....something. Generally, no sound. They are all shooting on phones and editing on their phones, maybe a computer. It's more about telling a story and getting iterations under their belt. I think the one other thing that is implied but should be upfront would be talking about what is a story. I would love to expose them to larger crew type situations and make better quality stuff, but some of it is sussing out who is good AND interested in different/more specific roles. Mostly I want them to enjoy crafting stories and maybe learn something too.
