Exactly right, Apple will never let you use the full power of this machine as it will throttle down. They went for form over function.
Why anyone would have assumed different is beyond me. Also it was confirmed on this site upon first announcement.

Have their 15mm Macro and its been very solid for what I've used it for, and this lens looks downright intriguing.
Been in both sandboxes for years, and have never had real issue with either. I feel it all depends on your budget and what you're used too. Adobe, BlackMagic, File transfer/transcoding apps work fine on both systems, with no real file issues.
Neat idea for those that want something they can just plug and play. Cubix has offered, along with several other companies, external GPUs for years. Also with newer GPUs coming at what seems like every 6 months now, being able to upgrade the card is a huge bonus.
