In my opinion, there is plenty going on in the Shining to make it exciting as well as"not so predictable".
Tom Cruise movies? You're spot on; he was extremely campy and corny in Top Gun and he has been consistently a terrible actor in every film he's been in. Many air heads just love him and certainly the Scientologist do...
Certainly your depiction of Jack and his relationship with Wendy is accurate on many levels and I'm glad you pointed this out. I do feel that a part of him wants to be a better person however and like many self centered abusive men, he is being enabled by his wife. I also believe that the story of Jack and Wendy are part of a bigger plot having to do with actual spirits and super natural occurrences at the hotel. It all comes together in a cinematic experience that became a classic for a reason.
For this translation of the novel, Shelley provided the perfect persona. She enhanced Jacks ability to be controlling and diabolical by being insecure and fragile. Shelley was a key ingredient in the movies success. It's a Horror film and the idea of "Shining" was conveyed masterfully.
