Great stuff! I think the intentionality critique is very valid but doesn't take away from my appreciation of this piece. I come from a commercial radio production background: long form docs with a primary V/O, music clips, sound bites and FX. It's nice to see video interview footage, b-roll footage, archival footage and text - all with different textures - cut together with a similar energy, pace, meaning and confidence. My only disappointment was with the interview audio. Definitely think that could've been handled much much better. That said, this piece was inspiring. Well done.
Personally, I went through the same search when I went on vacation a couple months ago. I finally just bit the bullet and picked up the Nexto DI ND2901 (1TB version) with the external battery. I also brought a 2TB WD passport that could connect directly to the Nexto for mobile/computer-free back up although I never needed it. I was shooting ML raw so maybe that's a bit much for normal 1080p shoots (??). Also, I haven't really checked this further, but I figure you could probably buy the cheapest Nexto version and put your own larger hard drive in it later (although I'm sure it'll void the warranty).
Anyways, I relied on it daily for 2 weeks, and it never let me down. It does present a new level of file management awareness, bcuz the Nexto drive and the external battery become another piece of equipment you have to make sure are both fully charged the night before + you'll want to know exactly how many transfers you can complete in the field before you run out of power.
All that said, no regrets (yet) and media-wise it takes CompactFlash/SD/SDHC/SDXC cards, so I feel like I'm fairly well future proofed (as long as I don't end up with a CFast camera :-)
Appreciate all the responses! So far I'm leaning towards Litepanel's Astra 1x1s although the CAME-TV leds seem slightly interesting (thx Chris!). They seem pretty bright and the price point is great too, but it seems like you really get what you pay for as far as overall build goes. The other issue I see is their dubious `Hi CRI' claim, which means nothing w/o a quantitative # (CRI rating). Anyone else got experience, comparisons with F&V/Litepanels, or a solid CRI rating?

Anyone got more hard info on this brand, namely: CRI rating, how it compares to the F&V and Litepanels brands?
Cool, The Astra is actually the one i was looking at as well, just wanted to see if anyone else would mention it or other options with the same or better performance specs. At least I know I'm on the right path, thx!
Thx! Going the 3x1x1 route is definitely an option, but I was thinking more in terms of one key light to go with the ring lights I already have. Ideally that one 1x1 would be powerful enough, and have a wide enough spread (with a softbox), to light two people. Then I'd just use the ring lights as fill and back. To me, a 1x1+2/3 ring lights would be a much lighter/portable kit compared to 3x1x1s. Does this make sense?
Appreciate the responses. It def seems like staying Canon is a lost cause. I'll probably be going the A7s route. Happy holidays!
