Bradley Cooper Talks About Being Mocked by the Hollywood Elite

I bet many of you think Bradley Cooper is living the dream. He went from a relative unknown, asking questions during an Inside the Actor's Studio, to one of the most heralded actors and now an Academy Award-nominated director. The guy is proving day in and out he can do whatever it takes. 

Cooper appeared on a recent episode of the “SmartLess” podcast. In it, he talked about his long road through Hollywood. The conversation is revealing, powerful, and intimate.

Cooper is one of those people you can learn a lot from. One thing that struck me is his humility. He's been at rock bottom, so he knows what it's like to be in the highest of highs. Still, there are others waiting to tear him down. 

Cooper told a story on the podcast where an unnamed famous director made a joke out of Cooper’s seven Oscar nominations. In the story, Cooper is at an afterparty and was joined by a famous actress friend who had three Oscar nominations herself.

They were talking to this famous director, and then the director said to Cooper, “What world are we living in where you have seven nominations and she’s only got three?”

Cooper's response was shock and also annoyance.

“I’m like, ‘Bro, why are you such an asshole?’” Cooper told the “SmartLess” hosts. “I would never fucking forget that. Go fuck yourself.”

This kind of stuff is ever-present in Hollywood. Jealous, biting remarks, and even just jerks. Cooper told another story where a “hero female actress” of his made a mean comment when he was nominated for Silver Linings Playbook.

“She’s like, ‘I saw your movie. You deserve the nom,’” Cooper said. “I was like, ‘What? I’m sorry, what?’ ‘The nom.’ Then like 10 or 20 minutes later—I’m not kidding—I passed her going to the bathroom and she mouths it, ‘The nom.’ I remember [thinking], what the fuck is this town?’ Can you imagine saying that to somebody? You’ve got to be fucked up to do that.”

This kind of stuff is so disheartening and terrible. It's impossible to find any excuse, other than people were just jealous.

We don't love hearing about these things, but the fact is Hollywood can be unforgiving and unsupportive. The most important thing you can do is be a nice person. Just be genuine, kind, and try to find a circle of friends who will support you through thick and thin.
