From Jason Blum's Blumhouse (the company that brought us Get Out, Happy Death Day, and the most recent remake of Halloween), comes Ma, director Tate Taylor's creepy, "this is what happens when you're too much of a helicopter parent" cautionary tale about an older woman (Octavia Spencer) who grows a little too obsessed with her new teenage friends.

If the logline sounds a bit crazy, that's kind of the point. Although the trailer gives quite a bit away, it also proves that no matter the director, Blumhouse productions have a similar style to them, a Twilight Zone-esque narrative mixed in with a sly comedic undertone. It's bizarre yet welcoming, friendly yet sinister.

The formula works, and it's to Blumhouse's credit that the company can make even the most ridiculous appear both safe and terrifying. Is Ma a comedy or a horror film? Blumhouse asks, "when you get right down to it, what's the difference between the two?"

Ma opens in theaters on May 31st, 2019.
