Blender Foundation Releases 4TB of 'Tears of Steel' Sony F65 4K Footage & Demonstrates Post Workflow
The Blender Foundation is constantly pushing the boundaries of availability, openness, and access to the raw materials it uses to create its ‘proof-of-Blender’ animated shorts. This type of access is usually more associated with open source software than filmmaking, but especially since the Project Mango live-action CGI/VFX-heavy Tears of Steel was realized, that distinction has become increasingly blurred. Now filmmakers, animators, or compositors looking to cut their teeth on professional-grade material have access to the entirety of Tears of Steel‘s footage, in 4k OpenEXR (in the ACES color space), courtesy Xiph.org. In the meantime, the Foundation has also made available a number of resources concerning their post-production pipeline, which allowed them to transcode 4K Sony F65 footage to those Linux-workable OpenEXR frames. Check below for more details. More »
In the midst of some tension and even some quite literal (and legal) contention, Sony’s RED/Alexa-aimed F55 and its less feature-rich sibling the F5 are in-stock at B&H and shipping out order to order. We’ve previously mentioned the comprehensive firmware update timeline released by Sony for the F5/F55 family, which also sees eldest little brother the FS700 rejuvenated with RAW support using Sony’s R5 recorder in July. Meanwhile, Sony is urging F5/F55 owners to update their cameras to firmware release 1.03, a previously unscheduled update which corrects a “black edge on highlights issue” in S-Log2 or HyperGamma modes. One of the more controversial screenplays of the 2012 award contenders was also the only screenplay of the ten Oscar-nominated screenplays not available for legal download for your consideration. Until now. Thanks to Sony Pictures, Mark Boal’s screenplay for Zero Dark Thirty has been declassified and put online for dissemination, dissection, and analysis by screenwriting aficionados, and perhaps a few U.S. senators and representatives, too (or at least their aides). As the days wind down to the official balloting for the Academy Awards, the last holdouts for putting their award-contending screenplays online for your consideration are finally making their moves. The awards machine is now in full throttle. Not that we necessarily care what pundits think about the awards race (or even the awards themselves), but we may have the pundits and their chatter to thank for our latest screenplay available for legal download for consideration: the long-awaited Argo, written by Chris Terrio, adapted from Joshuah Bearman’s Wired magazine article and Tony Mendez’s autobiography. Grab Some 4K Canon 1D C DSLR Sample Footage, and Check Out a Possible FCPX Workflow
Canon’s 4K video capable DSLR, the EOS-1D C, has marked an upset for the DSLR industry — and in more ways than one. Many feel that the addition of Motion-JPEG alone is not worth the camera’s $12K price point. This is particularly the case when weighing in controversial speculation that internally it’s mostly identical to its $7K 1080p sibling, the 1D X — and the fact that Canon is likely anticipating with gritted teeth the possibility of firmware hacks 4K-ifying the 1D X. That said, it could be a near-perfect blend of features depending on your application. If this is the case for you, but you want the chance to check out or grade some full-res video footage before pulling the trigger, you’re in luck — planet5D has just posted some downloadable 1D C 4K footage for your viewing consideration (assuming of course your machine can handle it). If ever there was a screenwriter that was fun to read, but really shouldn’t be emulated, that screenwriter would be Quentin Tarantino. Of course, that hasn’t stopped several screenwriters from trying, but it’s a fool’s errand (for that matter, it’s a fool’s errand to emulate any screenwriter). On the heels of several awards nominations, The Weinstein Company is revving up its tried-and-true awards machine and has recently churned out the screenplay of Django Unchained as an early holiday gift for your consideration. Michael Haneke provided a sober anchor during the Screenwriter Roundtable video we featured last week, making no apologies for creating a film that The Hollywood Reporter executive editor Stephen Galloway said shattered his screening guest who had recently experienced a loss similar to that depicted in the writer/director’s Cannes 2012 Palme d’Or winner Amour. Now that Amour has opened will open Dec. 19 in limited release here in the U.S., Sony Pictures Classics has graciously made the screenplay available for download for your consideration. More »

One of the best ways to learn about screenwriting is to read produced screenplays. A little bit of Google research can certainly turn up several screenplays in various formats (some less helpful than others). Admittedly, finding a pirated copy of a screenplay online doesn’t make me feel that great, either, even if I’m just searching for it for my own educational purposes. This time of year, however, the Interwebs deliver a pleasant surprise for aspiring screenwriters everywhere: award-hopeful screenplays for your consideration (and available for legal downloading).
