Resolve BMPCCChances are that, unless you live under a rock, you know that the already-reasonable price of the Blackmagic Pocket  Cinema Camera dropped dramatically earlier this month. As such, I think that it is pretty safe to assume that there are quite a few new owners of the bite-sized camera. For some, the post processing of the BMPCC footage will be similar to what they’ve experienced with many of the other cinema cameras that shoot log footage and RAW. However, for people who are just starting to work with the flat images from the Blackmagic Film Gamma, getting an appropriately colored and aesthetically pleasing image can seem like a daunting task. Luckily, Casey Faris uploaded a fantastic tutorial that will show you how to get snappy color from both your BMPCC ProRes and RAW files inside of DaVinci Resolve. More »

DaVinci Resolve 11 Beta 2Blackmagic has pushed the DaVinci Resolve 11 color grading suite even closer to being a full-fledged editor, but the company, at the least for the moment, does not have any interest taking editing jobs away from the big names like Final Cut, Premiere, and Avid. While the program is still in Beta form, it’s far closer to a finished product than lots of other Beta software, and they are releasing new updates all the time. The newest Beta 2 includes support for Apple’s new ProRes 4444 XQ codec, Final Cut Pro X XML 10.1.2, and a number of other new features. More »

DaVinci Resolve 11 EditingIn the early days of NAB 2014, Blackmagic Design shared a few new products that made a major splash. However, even though some of these products generated some serious excitement, their biggest announcement by far was the fact that DaVinci Resolve, the legendary color correction software, was now also a fully fledged NLE with a host of new trimming and timeline tools. DaVinci resolveWe got our first look at DaVinci Resolve 10 at NAB 2013, and at that moment it was clear that Resolve was taking aim at NLEs with the new “Edit” tab in the application. However, until version 10 was officially released, it was unclear just how the editing features of the program would function, and more importantly, whether or not they would allow Resolve to become a one-stop post production solution. In that first iteration, the editing features were solid, but not enough to unseat any NLEs. magic lantern raw davinci resolve 006_DR09Not too long ago, I posted about my post process for Magic Lantern RAW video, which relies heavily on Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve. This is in contrast to some Ginger HDR processes that allow you to stay completely in the Adobe realm, no proxies needed. Many would still like to employ Resolve in their color correction, however, since it’s a very powerful industry standard tool. One significant problem with the Magic Lantern/Resolve proposition was a type of ‘pink fringing’ artifacting that occurred in areas of high contrast. Now Magic Lantern-shooting Resolve users may rejoice: from the looks of things, the newly released(-ish) Davinci Resolve 10 fixes these fringing problems outright. More »

Blackmagic DaVinci ResolveNowadays, we equate ‘DaVinci’ with the powerful color correction software Resolve. It can be easy to forget DaVinci’s hardware-based origins, just as it can be easy to forget Media Composer’s origins as the dedicated machine editors used to call “The Avid.” Even in their software forms, these systems retain media matching abilities that were vital in the stand-alone NLE days — control of metadata. Resolve is no exception, even though we think of it primarily, even exclusively, as a grading tool. With the release of Apple Color several years ago, the once-niche field of high-end color grading trickled down to the average user. When Blackmagic released DaVinci Resolve on Mac it became more obvious that color grading was the next big wave. Having already been grading professionally with Color shortly after it was released, I quickly decided to invest in a traveling DaVinci Resolve Mac Pro tower. The client demand for color grading in particular, and a traveling station specifically, has grown my business at a rate I never thought possible. Just because the popular color correction software DaVinci Resolve uses a Mac monitor for its press image (at left) doesn’t mean it’s Mac only — any more. Resolve, which has a free version known fittingly as Resolve Lite, now comes in a Windows version for the first time thanks a newly-released Public Beta. If you have already purchased Resolve for Mac, the Windows version comes included, so you now have a Windows license too. More »
