Back-Bone Ribcage for GoPro HERO3We’ve already seen the GoPro HERO3 get some interchangeable lens abilities thanks to the Novo modification from Radiant Images and View Factor, but that system is a rental only, and according to the designer would retail for around $30,000, based on the work involved and the low volume. Well, now we’ve got a much, much cheaper solution that you can actually own, the Ribcage from Back-Bone — which will be available in a fully-modded camera with C-mount, or a DIY mod kit for a camera you already own. Check out more details below. More »

Tehkron CagePro for GoPro HERO3The GoPro HERO3 has really brought the popularity of the ultra-portable cameras to a whole new level with incredible performance in a very tiny package, but there are still some major gripes from filmmakers who are trying to have more control over their image and want a better way to power and mount the device. In comes the Tehkron CagePro. The cage is designed not only to let you power your GoPro with the very popular Canon LP-E6 batteries (used in cameras like the 7D and Mark II/Mark III), it will also let you attach filters to the front of the camera to better control exposure (rather than just letting the camera set a very high shutter speed). Click through for more on the cage. More »

Burning Man_gopro_phantomIf you’ve ever been to or seen images of Burning Man, a week-long event full of art, self-expression, and exploration (of many things,) and yes, a humongous burning man made of wood, it’d be difficult to imagine seeing something more spectacular than that — unless it was great aerial footage taken of the event itself. Shared with us by Duc-Duy Pham of DSLR Pros, check out this aerial video that uses a GoPro Hero3 and a modded DJI Phantom Quadcopter rig, allowing for more versatility and control in order to show Burning Man like it’s never been seen before. EasyGimbalCreatives involved in extreme action filmmaking are typically using GoPros in order to get those much desired POV and other seldom-seen shots. The drawback to using such a compact and lightweight camera, however, is stabilizing the shots you get, which means finding a stabilizer that will give you a really smooth image. Currently on Kickstarter, the EasyGimbal, designed exclusively for the GoPro 3, offers a lot in terms of affordability and style for being a 3-axis handheld camera stabilizer, but how steady can it keep your shots? Decide for yourself after the jump. More »

Novo_02Though tiny action cameras, like the GoPro, can take filmmaking and cinematography to new and exciting places (literally,) their limitations can be a bit of a drag. We’ve talked about the Novo Camera mod, a customized Hero3 with a wide range of features that have opened up doors for filmmakers to control the capture of their image. Michael Booth of Radiant Images shared a reel that was presented to the Director’s Guild of America, containing footage taken from the sky, a moving car, a kickflipping skateboard, a motorcycle, and even underneath a turtle. Video thumbnail for vimeo video See What an American Goldrush-Era Ghost Town Looks from the Air - nofilmschoolBy now we’re well acquainted with the power of aerial cinematography, with both ‘big’ cameras and small — and, conversely, big copters and small copters. Results can range from strikingly beautiful to beautifully haunting, and anywhere in between. Even (or especially) with a GoPro! Now, Aaron Grimes and Russell Brown have combined the disembodied perspective of aerial photography with the strangely deserted modern ruins of an historical Californian mining town. Meet Bodie, CA by way of the GoPro HERO3 and DJI Phantom quadcopter. More »

Contour CameraWhile GoPro might be the most popular ultra-portable and relatively inexpensive “action camera,” it’s certainly not the only game in town. Contour, a Seattle company just under a thousand miles away from GoPro’s Bay Area headquarters, actually started their own action camera right around the same time as the original GoPro. A lot has changed in the decade since, but it looks like the competition has finally brought down Contour. More »

Video thumbnail for vimeo video Robert McIntosh GoPro - nofilmschoolYou’ve likely seen a few aerial videos online at one time or another, with some using a DSLR or mirrorless cameraSony F55RED EPIC, or even an ARRI ALEXA. Viewfactor - Radiant Images - novo_07The GoPro HERO3 is a fantastically useful little camera for getting into all sorts of places, but there are major issues with the amount of control you have over the image. For starters, the camera is not all that usable on certain productions because of its automatic exposure settings. To combat this, Radiant Images, with the help of View Factor, built a custom HERO3 with an interchangeable C-mount called the Novo (not to be confused with the Novo 2K which is confirmed to be an SI-2K). The Novo has already been used on some major Hollywood productions, but if you were interested in purchasing one at some point (since they are currently rental-only), you might be disappointed. Novo2KRadiant Images, a rental house based in LA, but with other locations around the country, introduced a modified GoPro HERO3 a few months ago called the Novo. Developed with help from View Factor, the modification introduced interchangeable lenses and manual exposure options to the tiny compact camera. Now, at the Cine Gear Expo event in Hollywood, Radiant is introducing a brand new Novo that is capable of shooting uncompressed 2K RAW images, which should far surpass the quality of the previous camera based on the HERO3. The GoPro HERO3 might be a relatively inexpensive camera that can be mounted anywhere, but a few more mounting points would make it infinitely easier to position and stand up to abuse over time. That’s why Jared and the team at Wide Open Camera have come up with a metal housing they are calling the Combat Cage. They’ve taken to Kickstarter to fund the project, so click through to learn more about it. More »

There has been an explosion in aerial videos over the last few years thanks to cheaper “drones” and “copters” and smaller and smaller high-quality cameras, but it still takes a tremendous amount of skill and patience to properly take these machines into the air and get usable footage. We’ve posted a number of these videos in the past, but GoPro recently shared one from Robert McIntosh that blew me away. Taking his GoPro to the Santa Monica Pier, Robert does a few maneuvers that had me expecting the worst, but his camera and the copter came out the other side unscathed. Check it out below: More »
