Kinefinity_KINEMAX_6K1Kinefinity, the Chinese company that has been making scientific cameras for years, is now making some waves in the cinema camera market. Their first two models received a bit of attention for the features offered in such affordable packages, but now we are getting the next generation of those models, the KineMINI and KineMAX, which give 4K and 6K resolutions, respectively. We talked with Kinefinity at NAB, and while we already knew the 4K camera was going to come in around $3-$6,000 depending on the package, we now have some official pricing for the 6K camera (which is also capable of 14 stops of dynamic range, and an incredible 16 stops in a special 3K mode), and it’s being offered for a limited time under $10,000. This one came as a bit of a surprise back in January, and now it looks like pre-orders have already begun. The KineRAW-MINI, a new camera from Kinefinity, has an identical sensor to the KineRAW-S35 (which is shipping in China). However, it forgoes some of the fancier aspects of the larger S35 — like Cineform and dual SSD slots — to create a compact and much more affordable version. We haven’t heard much news about the KineRAW S35 since pre-orders began back in August. The Chinese-made 2K camera capable of shooting a few different flavors of RAW video to SSDs will come in well under $10,000 for a working package, and could make some noise once it finally begins shipping in the States sometime in 2013. While it’s not available all over the world yet, the Kinefinity KineRAW S35 has made some serious noise across the filmmaking community, because it’s poised to disrupt the industry in a similar way as the (not yet shipping in volume) Blackmagic Cinema Camera. At a base price of $6,000 ($7K-$8K for a working package), the mostly non-proprietary 2K 12-bit Super 35mm uncompressed and compressed RAW camera is matched in specs (in this price range) only by the no-longer-available RED ONE MX. Specs are really only part of the equation, however, and it’s the actual image the camera produces that is arguably more important. The last time we talked the KineRAW S35, Kinefinity had released RAW sample clips for the general public to mess around with and grade. If this is going to be the way things are done with smaller companies (like Blackmagic) — Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, and Sony are going to have to get on board. Allowing users to handle files straight from a camera is the only way to judge actual quality and to know if a particular camera is going to work for you. It’s natural for anyone to be skeptical when a new camera is announced. We were skeptical that RED could actually make a camera that did everything they said it could do (I think they have finally delivered with EPIC and SCARLET). Right now there are still quite a few people who are skeptical of the Digital Bolex and the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. The same also goes for a Chinese camera that just might surprise the world and be the most affordable Super 35mm sensor camera in existence. That camera, the Kinefinity KineRAW S35, is nearing completion, and we’ve got quite a bit of footage and an interview explaining the entire camera in detail. The KineRAW is a Chinese digital cinema camera that I called (perhaps too harshly) a “knockoff” of the ARRI ALEXA and RED cameras. This is a guest post by Wentao Marvin.

As China is celebrating the Lunar New Year (the Year of Dragon), Kinefinity KineRAW development has entered the final stage of internal user testing, and public testing is scheduled to roll out in February. In our global economy, one could amend the phrase “nothing is certain in life except death and taxes” to “nothing is certain in life except death, taxes, and knockoffs.” The country responsible for half of my existence, China, is knockoff/bootleg Ground Zero, and so it should come as no surprise that the first reports of a RED and ARRI ALEXA clone come from The Motherland. The 2K KineRAW Kinefinity camcorder is like a larger RED (using “KineMAG” SSD drives instead of REDMAG SSD drives) with the size and weight of an ALEXA. It even uses basically the same menu system and display on the side of the body as does the ALEXA (knockoffs are not exactly known for their originality). The camera will record to CinemaDNG or Cineform RAW and will supposedly ship for the “gorgeous” price of $7-8k. More »
