Leica 1Earlier in the year, we covered the announcement of a brand-spanking new set of high-end cinema lenses from Leica. Most of us know about, or have at least heard about Leica’s Summilux-C primes, which might very well be the finest cinema lenses known to man. The only caveat to the Summilux line is that you would have to sell a kidney (and maybe some other vital organs) in order to afford a set of your own. Leica’s new line of cinema lenses, the Summicron-C Primes, look to offer the same unmatched optical quality of their bigger brothers in a much smaller and slightly more affordable package. Leica R Metabones MFT Speed BoosterMetabones delayed the MFT Speed Booster for Micro 4/3 mounts earlier in the year, and it wasn’t clear when we might see the final version, even though a few pre-release adapters have been going out to different reviewers. If you’re a Leica R or Contax owner, however, you’re in luck, as Metabones has just started to ship the adapter for those particular lenses. More »

There were rumors that Leica would be announcing a new camera with video capabilities, and sure enough, with their new $7,000 full-frame 24 Megapixel Leica M, they added a video function. There is a lot of love for Leica out there thanks to their sharp and bokeh-licious lenses, and their simple but high-quality digital cameras, and while their pricing is a bit high, adding a video mode means another possible option for those looking for compact and impressive image quality. For much of its recent history, Leica has been introducing high-end photography gear (with high prices to match). Just a few years ago, however, the company decided to get into the cinema lens game with a brand new set of PL-mount primes designed to go head-to-head with the best cine glass out there — like the Zeiss Master Primes. Those lenses, the Summilux-C primes, are in high demand, and you’ve got quite a long waiting list to get them if you’re a rental house. They aren’t for every budget though, even as a rental, however, because they retail for well over $20,000 per lens. Not too long ago SLR Magic (maker of the 12mm T/1.6 and 50mm T/0.95 lenses) confirmed that they were in the early stages of developing anamorphic lenses designed for Micro 4/3 mounts — like the Panasonic GH3 and the Blackmagic Cinema Camera MFT. This is certainly very exciting for any lower-budget or DSLR-level shooters who have so far been deprived of any low-cost anamorphic shooting options (or at least those that don’t require serious workarounds). They’ve also said they will not be developing select new lenses the Leica mount that premiered at Photokina. More »

Camera modifications never cease to amaze. We’ve already seen some really nifty lens modifications with the Canon 5D Mark II, but this is in another league entirely. Robert Benson, a professional photographer, had a $6,500 Leica Noctilux 50mm f/1.0 lens but no Leica M9 camera to put it on (as you do). What’s the next best thing? Take a cheaper full-frame camera like the Mark II, gut it, and put a mount on there capable of taking M lenses. Check out a little bit of the process and some of the results below. More »

Leica, known for its beautifully handbuilt rangefinder full-frame 35mm still cameras, and Hasselblad, known for their high-end medium format camera systems, have both announced new cameras at Photokina. While not terribly exciting news on its own, what is exciting is that for the first time ever, both companies now have cameras capable of video. Is this a turning point for manufacturers, where a stills camera is no longer enough? Will all still cameras be capable of shooting RAW video some day? Cameras, cameras, cameras. It seems like every day a new camera body is announced (and sometimes lenses, too). While there are always new features to entice us, we know that in this world of planned obsolescence every piece of technology has a finite shelf life. Even RED builds cameras with the knowledge that technology can improve rapidly (which is why they are offering sensor upgrades a few months from now). So what’s a filmmaker to do? What’s the safe investment? Lenses. Specifically, lenses that can be adapted to a wide range of cameras right now, and also in the future. Just a quick note about the DSLR Guide (which recently surpassed 250,000 views!): I made a number of minor updates over the weekend, including adding Leica R lenses to the Lenses section, updating the Filtration section to include the Fader ND Mark II, updating the Power page with new battery options, and making several other housekeeping changes.
