GoPro Unveils New HERO5, HERO5 Session, and $800 Foldable Karma Drone

Meet the new GoPro HERO5 as well as the highly-anticipated drone, Karma.

GoPro held its big event today and unveiled a bunch of exciting new products: the long-awaited HERO5, the HERO5 Session, and, of course, its first-ever aerial drone, Karma.

To start off, GoPro introduced the next generation of the HERO line of action cams, the 4K HERO5, which is not only waterproof without a housing at up to 33', but also features voice control. The HERO5 also features advanced video stabilization, larger 2" display, and stereo audio. The HERO5 will be available on on October 2 for $400.

Tech specs

  • 4K video/12MP photo
  • Voice control
  • 2" display
  • Single, Burst, Timelapse shooting modes
  • RAW + WDR photos
  • On-screen exposure control
  • Stereo audio
  • GPS
  • Waterproof without housing (up to 33')
  • One-button control
  • Advanced video stabilization

HERO5 Session

As we all know, the Session line is the compact version of the HERO line, and this new iteration is no different. The HERO5 Session has most of the same features of the HERO5 but with a much smaller form factor. You get voice commands, 4K video, waterproofing, three different shooting modes, and one-button control. It costs less than its bigger brother at $300, but packs pretty much the same punch.

Tech specs

  • 4K video/10MP photo
  • Single, Burst, Timelapse shooting modes
  • Advanced video stabilization
  • One-button control
  • Waterproof without housing (up to 33')
  • Price: $300

Perhaps the most exciting announcement of the day was GoPro's very first drone, Karma—which, as you'll soon begin to see, is not just a drone.

Because of its interesting design, which includes the drone itself as well as a removable gimbal that can be used as a handheld stabilizer (all included in-box), Karma allows you to capture shots from the air, handheld, and mounted to different types of gear. Its foldable design also makes it very compact, and GoPro has included a backpack for easy transport.

Karma will be available October 23 for $800, $1,100 with a Hero5 included, or $1,000 with a Hero5 Session.

Tech specs

  • Maximum Speed: 35 mph (15 m/s)

Wow! The drone is very exciting. Great price point as well. To be able to get the drone with the Hero5 for $1,100 is amazing!

The Karma package is an insanely great deal. This is also vastly better designed for portability than DJI's options. The footage from the new cameras look spectacular, I wonder how much lens correction is going on in post, or if the new cameras have a lot less barrel distortion.

Its still fisheye so no thank you. Waiting for DJI to put their x3 camera in an action camera housing.

If you are using "Wide" angle view, the fisheye is easily removed with the GoPro Studio software... but the new Hero 5 has a new angle of view mode called "Linear" which has no fisheye effect at all; meant to be used by filmmakers.

Awesome features and price! Finally a design where it appears the camera will not shoot the props while flying forward! DJI - take note. Hopefully the Karma will not have fly-away issues like every other drone.

Really great. But that 1000 meters is thstntravel or from your controller? Farming is taking off with drones. I'm the 80's I wanted to make a drine for weeding. I determined you could fly around and spot spray and locate weeds. I also came up with away to auto identify weeds, so the whole system can now be sent to auto handle the Job. Now, weeds are not air accessible on all crops, but between farmers and government, you are tallimg maybe 10k units on Australia alone. Piosons can be very concentrated requiring very little carrying capacity. But you need to run the drone as many kilometers as you can, a good opportunity for sales of increased range transmitters and batteries, and larger drones.

Now, back to this one. I feel it is 8 times bigger than it needs to be. It should have the 3D 4kp60 Hero 5+ 3D with 8k shoots and video (good for weeding analysis). It is great in many ways.
