Another day, another -70 points

I'm glad to see that the site's moderators have responded to an earlier question about excessive spamming and tag abuse. Apparently they are going to get on that Real Soon Now.

I commented in that thread that another problem on this site is the lack of transparency when it comes to reputation, specifically down-votes. I can understand that one doesn't want to create a system whereby members who are hostile to one another can stalk each others actions and respond to a downvote (which costs the downvoter only one point and the one being downvoted 10 points) with two more downvotes of their own. However, I think it is high time the editorial people look at who on these boards are constantly and consistently downvoting either everybody who responds to a particular topic (i.e., RED cameras vs. BMCC) or downvoting a single person (regardless of the subject of their post). If somebody really deserves to lose 100 points a day for their bad posts, I would hope that the moderators could make it clear to them (me?) what's wrong. Right now I have absolutely no idea where the real problem lies, but clearly there is a problem.

I sincerely believe that there are a few bad actors who are just sniping because they haven't grown up and they know they are not being watched. It would be great if the editorial staff could create some queries that would identify such bad behavior and then take appropriate action.

I'd be surprised to see the NFS mods waste their time on such a trivial thing. It's numbers on a forum board for heavens sake.

It's a general assumption of knowledge and well roundness on film making topics. Are you more likely to take advice on magic latern hacking your camera from someone with 10 rep or someone with 25000 like Guy?

You're definitely right, Clark. But I'm not going to waste mental RAM worrying if people will take my advice on this forum.

Yes and no.
If you post a lot, you get more points. It doesn't say a lot about the quality of the posts. Up and downvoting aren't solid quality indicators either:
downvotes often seem arbitrary and upvotes are like "I agree" or "thank you".

So yes: more points seem to indicate more experience.
And no: the absence of points is no indication of a lack of knoeledge/experience. Someone with zero points could just walk in and give the best advice ever.

If it weren't for up and downvotes the points would purely indicate activity. The mix of activity and votes make it a mixed bag of hard to interpret numbers.
However, calculating an average score by dividing the votes by the number of posts and replies would still imply a mix of popularity and knowledge.

Arlgh! This whole system does imply a lot, but gives not hard data. It is just a way to encourage activity on the boards :-p

I get the point of the system. I just don't care. If there wasn't a point system would you still visit this website? I would.

As for ML advice. I'd figure it out for myself as it's hardly rocket science.

Yep, me too: I'm not here for the points. There are more valuable 'points' to be 'scored' in life :-p

I generally have a lot of things on my mind. My NFS forum score is never one of them.

LOL, it seems almost everything I write here gets downvoted.
It makes me wonder: who did I upset?
If that is the case: let's talk about it.
Or is what I say such a complete nonsense all the time?

Anyway, I'm just surprised. If you don't agree, just give a different opinion.
The downvotes don't determine my happiness, btw.

I watched falling stars in France all night, slept on the beach and watched the sun rise eating strawberries and baguette au fromage. No downvote can take that away :-p

It seems like there is someone downvoting everything I write. Or is there a group of people that doesn't like humor or a no nonsense 'just do it' attitude?
If you disagree: post a reply I can learn from.
