Auto Focus

Why are there so many filmmakers talking about camera with auto focus? That's like a no brainer... who shoots with auto focus when filming though and when did this become a big deal?

Since Canon offered the opportunity to pay $500 to upgrade your C100 to get the advanced AF functions. And also since the 70D. This showed the entire film & video world that accurate AF while filming is possible. Since the C100 Mk II and the C300 Mk II the AF became even better. Also the Sony A7R II offers a really good AF while video.
With that cameras AF is really usable in video. That is why everybody his hyping that (not everybody of course but you have that feeling because those voices are very loud).

It's a pretty useful tool if you're on a gimbal or Steadicam with no wireless FF. Or if you're doing a vlog type set up and have to use a face-detect feature.

When any yahoo with $500 could be a "film" maker, auto-focus became important. Most professional filmmakers I know never use it. I've done entire shoots focusing without even looking at the viewfinder, including stuff that required follow-focus.
