How do you meet other people in your area who are also into filmmaking?

Seeing the feature request about being able to search for members in your location, got me wondering... how do others find like minded folks?

For me it seems to be either via Facebook or via others I already know. Beyond that, there is an odd website or two but they're largely just specific to my area and not generally useful.

I'm a bit spoiled, living in a city where there is a major film school. Other than that, it's just networking. Doing work, people asking questions when I'm out shooting and things like that. This new filming social media site looks incredible though and I really hope it takes off:

Around here (north alabama) it's been nearly exclusively word-of-mouth.

I'm with Alex, I'd love to see movidiam take off. There's plenty of talent just about anywhere (even in alabama!) and I always want to find new folks to collaborate with, learn from, and balance strengths/weaknesses with. The work we do is built on relationships and people.

Shoot a lot of stuff, try moving it on social media and you might get contacted by people on the film industry

I've got to agree with this. The harder you work... the luckier you get!

Thus shooting heaps and sharing it. (remembering when you share it to thank the people who worked with you! An important tip)

If one is new to a city and doesn't know anybody, it can be difficult to find and meet people. One requirement is time; it isn't going to happen overnight. I've had some success checking out websites like Craigslist or Meetup for opportunities in my area. As the saying goes, "It's not who you know, it's who knows you."

If there was a way to find people in your area and a way to connect with them that would be a major help.

I too have this issue, even living in a town like LA. My suggestions are to reach out to local acting groups, clubs etc as they want to act as much as you want to film. Same goes to stunt groups etc. In terms of filmmakers, ive found local post groups like LAPPG and LACPUG to be really helpful and they usually have a local meeting in many areas. Hope my tips helped and hope to see others ideas and suggestions.
