How to Get Bad Ass Prop Guns for Your Film

When my team and I were making my first short film BROKEN (Watch it on Amazon Prime) and Lipstick and Bullets we really wanted to have functional and professional looking guns for the project. Obviously we weren’t going to use real guns and getting our hands on working prop guns was too cost prohibited.

We knew we could create some bad ass muzzle flashes in visual effects but I wanted to have some practical guns on set, that had blow back, to enhance the VFX and ultimately make the guns fights look real.

Softair used to make a licensed replica smith and wesson m500 revolver, chromed, full metal, with co2. For your dirty hairy scenes.....

There are lots of gas operated metal airsoft guns that will look and function almost identically to a real steal firearm. Check out websites like hotspotairsoft.com, or even your local dicks sporting goods may have them (though they may only have the lower end, not so real looking kind). Worth a check.

Why wouldn't you use real guns firing blanks? Then you'd get blowback and muzzle flash too.
