RED Epic or GH4 ?

Interesting quick comparison between the image captured by a RED Epic camera and a Panasonic GH4...

Obviously the RED camera can do many things the GH4 can't, but it's surprising how close the image of these cameras can be.

Red Gamma 3 is not a finishing LUT. Its meant as the beginning of a grade. You can't compare RED footage out of the box to anything. In a low contrast scene , Red Gamma 3 looks like Log coming out of other cameras. Its way easier to match low con images than saturated contrasty images.

In this particular example, the GH4 looks a little washed out, and is lacking in detail (see vest and star patterns) For me, the RED seems to have more depth in this example. The RED also seems to retains more detail in the highlights, which can be seen on the curtain. Strictly from a tech POV the RED wins out in this instance. But TBH, it's like asking me what my favourite flavour ice cream is. I like Vanilla, but you may well like Strawberry. The same goes with your choice of camera. Consider what you like, what you want, and what you want it to FEEL like. I wouldn't generally choose RED cameras any more (I shoot national TV commercials mostly) due to my indifference on the colour science in the sensors (with the exception of the new DRAGON sensor, which looks interesting although I am still yet to shoot with). Give me an Alexa, and it will win out for me every time for Cinema and Drama work. For me, RED works for certain genres and styles. All great technology at the end of the day.

It's obvious that the GH4 records in 8-bit 4:2:0. Look at the gradient at the back on the wall. The one of the Epic is much smoother. I would like to see a comparison with the Epic and GH4 with Shogun attached.

8 bit 4:2:0 internally. I wish my gh4 was capable of 4:2:2. capable of 10 bit 4:2:2 via hdmi out, both in 4K UHD and 1080p.
