When should I join a union as a Director of Photography?

Ok so I have a feature film under my belt, lots of commercial work. I'm getting higher quality projects but not quite at the level I want. Is joining a union a good idea, and if so who should I join? I'm in Dallas but intend to move out to LA when possible.

Being out of Dallas Everything here is non-union. So I don't know much about them outside of SAG.

Thanks for the help everyone,

Clint

If you're not getting offered union jobs then I don't think it's the right time to join. It might be best to wait a bit--you'll probably know when it's the right time. At a certain point it may be a good idea to join, but if you aren't getting union work then you're paying unnecessary costs.
