Why downvotes are bad for NFS

It's been brought up before but without a clear reason why. I think having the ability to downvote in it's current form hurts the freedom of discussion. A prime example:

If you look at the comments for this, there are TONS of downvotes, even on great opinions/ideas/explanations. I look through this and personally don't understand, it discourages me from wanting to comment further. Criticism to me is always welcomed, but so much negativity (even in small amounts like this) can really hurt a community.

One of these comments could have been someones first post, where they took a decent amount of time to write up their opinion. After seeing they have gotten downvoted 3 or 4 times, it could seriously discourage them from wanting to express their opinion again.

I think a very easy solution to this is to either remove downvoting completely, or simply leave it there but don't let things go negative (like reddit). Overall, it's not promoting a healthy community in my eyes. I understand some people might not care, but others might.

We'll always have folks that just want to antagonize. I'm sure Ryan and his crew are fielding our comments and concerns and are working thru the system on a trial basis. I have no doubt it will flex and adapt.

I was just about to rant on this myself. I posted a comment about shooting from an airplane window.

"Another essential item - Lens hood. This allows you to press the camera right up to the window and get rid of any reflections."

It HAD 1 up-vote and now it has -1. So, that comment received two down-votes.

I assume someone wants their "score" (don't get me started) to look good so they down vote people with scores higher than them (or just everyone). It's counter productive to having intelligent discussions and just encourages troll-like behavior.

I concur, Alex. Get rid of it. It makes sense on some sites but not this one.

I agree Luke. I think NFS should do away with the downvotes, and leave upvotes and a Spam button or something. Then if you like somebody's post you can show that by upvoting them, if you don't agree with their post you can reply and make your case, and if their post is abusive or derogatory or spam you can flag that to NFS.

It'd create a more positive and constructive community, and it'd also make discussions of subjects where all of the fanboys go crazy much more accurate and representative of the whole NFS community, as opposed to now where some people are motivated to go downvote genuinely good, constructive criticisms of stuff they're protective of. See: Chris Nolan films, RED cameras, etc...
