Wow! Things Are a Lot Faker Than I Thought They Were...

I stumbled across this VFX breakdown for the old TV show "Ugly Betty", and I can't believe how much CGI work they did for the outdoor shots. Just blows my mind when I watch this...

The "depth of field matte" FX layer is pretty amazing, as it creates a shallow DOF background out of a totally sharp image. Freaky stuff.

The DOF is just blurring things in 3D space since each house is a separate matte pushed further back in 3D space. That's all fairly simple FX for someone who has skill in matte painting. Amazing what some simple tricks can do on the computer!
