Best lens for Nikon D5300?

I'm looking to move away from that kit lens on my Nikon D5300 and don't know what lens to buy. Looking for a sharp zoom lens that I could use for time lapse and some stills too. I am also on a smaller budget.

There is no such thing as a best lens.
The question is what would you want to use it for.

You mention time lapse so you might want to start with a Nikon 24mm f/2.8D lens or the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX.

The Tamron or Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 zooms are quite good and currently cost less than $500 brand new. Tamron also make a more expensive version of this lens with built-in stabilization ( they call it "vibration control" or VC ) but I've read that older non-VC lens is slightly sharper than the newer lens.
