Creating Subtitles?

I have been googling this to death with very little help for what I feel is a pretty common issue...
I shot a documentary in india earlier this year and have 3 interviews that I need subtitled. I've had the interviews transcribed but I am having issues getting those words onto video.
here is what I need from my subtitles:

-I dont want them to be an effect burned into the video, there will be other shots over the interview at times but I'd like the subtitles to still be "on top" as the subject continues to talk

-editable fonts? I tried premiere cc's captioning, but that shit is so rigid and useless and ugly.

I know that this is probably a really simple thing that I have been googling 2 degrees away from, but I'd appreciate any help and advice on where to turn to. Plug ins? Apps? In NLE tools? I am willing to be an idiot having missed something obvious just to solve this problem.

thanks guys!

Use Titles in Premiere. It's weird working with it, but it works. I've subtitled many projects this way and it's worked just fine...

I use Premiere CS6. Recently finished doc in Spanish, see it in my profile. Worked with titles and semi transparent strip(Photoshop). It works for me. You can always render a copy without subs and strip in original language.
