External recorder with GH4

Hello NFS,
I'm looking to rent/buy a used Atomos external recorder so I can film in 10-bit V-log with my GH4.

Naturally I'd like to squeeze the best possible quality out of the camera, but don't want to over-invest in a recorder that exceeds the GH4's capabilities.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an optimal external recorder / GH4 pairing? Thanks.

Are you using an external recorder for the 10 bit or the codec?

I just ask because if 10 bit is what you're after just upgrade to the GH5.

Thanks! I'd like to record 10-bit, as the footage will be chroma-keyed. Looking to rent an ext. recorder to maximize my GH4.

I think your best option would to be upgrade to the GH5 instead of getting an external recorder. This way you can get 10 bit internally and don't have to deal extra storage and media.

If you need the extra larger display though, then maybe the Shogun Flame is what you're looking for.

Cool I'll take a Shogun rental for a spin. Thanks!

The original SHOGUN (prior to the Flame) would be a much less costly upgrade than trading out a GH4 for a GH5. As well, the SHOGUN records file formats that are more NLE-friendly. (The GH5 produces files that only the studio version of Resolve can read, not the free version). The OP doesn't say whether they have other monitoring tools for focus, waveform, etc., but the SHOGUN makes it so much easier to hit good focus, find good exposure, etc., compared with the tools native to the GH4 (or GH5).

Of course if you need to put your camera on a gimbal, then the external monitor changes things a lot. But if you are recording on sticks, I'd recommend the SHOGUN.

Excellent, thanks. I'm using AE/Premiere for post; do you have a strong feeling re: Ninja vs Shogun? As far as I can tell the difference is HDMI only vs. HDMI/SDI outs.

The Video Devices Pix-E5 and Pix-E7 are also great options and depending on other parts of your workflow or needs might be better than the Atomos offerings (post-workflow, sound quality, shooting on a gimbal or sticks, etc.)

Thanks! I'll check out Video Devices lineup. My main focus is getting 10-bit/ minimally compressed footage for post in AE/Premiere; no audio in the initial shoot so that's flexible.
