How to get instrumental versions of songs?

How do people obtain instrumental versions of tracks? I don't mean ones that have been edited to remove the vocals, I mean the original backing track. Wondering if anyone knows, I can't see anywhere online where the instrumental version is available to buy? This somehow must be possible as I've seen TV commercials use just backing tracks. Hopefully someone can help me :)

Thanks, Jack

For TV and Film, they'll usually work with the original musicians/ recording artists, and get the original backing track from them. It's almost the same process as getting royalties to a song from a musician, which is the best option, but costs a pretty penny. What a few people i've worked with have done, is make their own composition of the song, as close to the original as they can, and you can find a lot of those on YouTube; most offering Creative Commons.
Hope that helped a bit.

Very interesting. I have wondered the same. Craig, if the songs are imitating the original is that a legal gray area? Or how do the laws fit in with that? If it is a green light that sounds like a great solution.
