Ask a Question
Hi guys and girls.
I'm looking for a good wide angle lens for my Nikon D5300 and Nikon 5200.
My budget is around $500. Any help would be awesome!
A couple of questions...
Is this lens for both video and still photos ? ( autofocus is important for still photo work )
Do you want a slightly-wide, normal-wide, or super-wide lens ?
I love shooting with a slightly-wide lens ( 35mm on a Full Frame camera ) as it's kind of a more dramatic standard lens than say a 50mm on a Full Frame camera.
Normal-wide lenses ( 28mm on a Full Frame camera ) I find a bit boring as they are too wide to be used as a standard lens, but they aren't wide enough to create dramatic wide angle shots.
I also love super-wide lenses ( 24mm or wider on a Full Frame camera ) because they instantly create a very dramatic and immersive shot.
For an APS-C camera ( like your D5200 and D5300 ) a 24mm lens would equate to a slightly-wide angle of view, an 18mm lens would equate to a normal-wide angle of view, and a 16mm or wider would equate to a super-wide angle of view.
Depending on the type of lens you want, I would look at either the Nikon autofocus primes or the Rokinon manual primes at these focal lengths.

>>>Mainly for video and a normal-wide to super-wide lens
Then one of the following Rokinon manual lenses would be my first pick...
Rokinon 10mm T3.1 Cine Lens for Nikon : $425http://goo.gl/aoIaFl
Rokinon 14mm T3.1 Cine ED AS IF UMC Lens for Nikon : $329http://goo.gl/4gnN6n
Rokinon 16mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Nikon : $359http://goo.gl/2I10Bb
...Rokinon also make a 12mm lens but for some reason they don't offer it in a Nikon mount. No idea why ?
