Poltergeist/Ghost effects

Hello! I am an udergrad directing a film this semester for class.

Our script is dark comedy about a ghost. Throughout the script books come off the shelves, papers fly around the room, pictures fall off the wall, faucets turn on, a glass set on the table falls in the floor, etc.

The only way I can really think to do this without messing around with After Effects (which I really don't want to use) is by using fishing line and having someone unseen pull the objects down with the line.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

One of our theatre professors graciously offered us his house to film in, so we really don't want to break anything while fabricating this chaos. I'd really like to avoid using computer generated effects, if possible. And remember this is a class film with a budget of as-little-as-possible.

Thanks so much!
