What hardware to bring while on the road shooting?

I will be traveling the west coast documenting and filming my adventures that will eventually end up in my personal film project. What i have with me, besides camera equipment and the 5D Mark III is a nice hefty Lacie hard drive for storage. What i don't have is something to transfer those files and work on my photographs on the go. I do have a old HP laptop but i am not considering that as an option. I wont be touching the video files besides backing them up on the external hard drive but i would like to work on my photographs while i am on the road. My budget is low and i can't spend a grand on a MacBook Air or Ipad Pro, but has anyone ever used the older Ipads to edit photographs? Any solution to this is welcome. I may be able to spend around $400.

I've done some light photo editing on an ipad mini 2 & it does pretty well. I would recommend at least 32 GB model because the 16 GB seems to fill up quickly with apps. You also may want to get the SD card adapter. I've only transferred pics using AirDrop from my iPhone.
