What are some affordable sound recording options when shooting? Ive heard many times on podcast that using, even with an external mic, the onboard recording is not recommended.
The most commonly recommended inexpensive digital recorders are the Zoom H4n and the Tascam DR-40. Both in the $150-$200 range. If you do a search in the forums you'll find way more info.

A used TASCAM DR-60D will give you noticeably better quality than an H4n. I've used both. The H4n is a handy little recorder but too noisy and lacking headroom for video production.

Internal recording is not that bad, you just have to use a mic that have internal preamp like the rode vmp. The choice of an external recorder depends on your budget and needs. If you want to go dirt cheap I would advise you to get a Zoom H1, then you can pair it ither with a rode smartlav+ (lav mic) or with a shotgun mic like the zoom videomic pro or the takstart. You can also use the zoom to feed your camera so you don't have to sync and if you do have to you can do it easily.
