Article Comment – New York Times 'Op-Docs' Pitching Competition Calls for Short Documentary Proposals

The application is online (http://www.camdenfilmfest.org/pointsnorth), but yes, selected finalists need to be there to pitch in person. They don't subsidize travel costs for finalists (unlike the Points North Pitch) so that does fall on the filmmakers.

Also, take a look at the FTHP fiscal sponsorship page: "You will not have that 5% penalty if you don’t hit your goal. You get paid no matter how much you collect. From the Heart pays you twice a month during the campaign." If you know of a fiscal sponsor that does NOT charge around 5% or more, I'm all ears.

The Fiscal Sponsorship (http://www.fromtheheartproductions.com/fiscal.shtml) and the Roy W. Dean Film Grant (http://www.fromtheheartproductions.com/grant-lafilm.shtml) are two separate entities (both by From the Heart Productions). Productions use fiscal sponsors so that donors can write tax-deductible checks to the production -- because many donors are willing to donate more if their gift will be tax-deductible. That would be the reason to use a fiscal sponsor like FTHP on your crowdfunding campaign (the idea being that you might raise much more money because donors -- especially wealthy donors -- have an extra incentive in the tax write-off). Many foundations will only give funds to productions with fiscal sponsorship for similar reasons.
