Headline is super misleading. They did not shoot the film in one take - the featurette makes it very clear that they shot it to APPEAR as though it unfolds in one take. Looking at the various rigs and the fact that he clearly mentions multiple days of shooting in the video, it's clear that the film is shot like Birdman, with a series of long takes stitched together in post to create the appearance of a single take.
How does an entire article on the best films of 1999 not even mention Magnolia? Utterly baffling.
The film itself has some issues and I'd be shocked if anyone ends up actually seeing it, but I'd be remiss not to mention that Masanobu Takayanagi's work on Hostiles might just be my favorite of the year. Epic yet intimate, sumptuous yet gritty. It really has it all. It's a shame the film that surrounds it is so comparatively lackluster.
Yes - like any digital sensor, the Helium gains exposure latitude in the highlights as you increase ISO, and loses latitude in the shadows. Between 800ISO and 1600ISO the DR will "shift" towards the highlights by one stop. The Alexa does this as well - exposure latitude extends to being able to retain +6 stops overexposure in highlights at 1600ISO, up of +5 at 800!
I completely agree - after we started the test we realized how much it would have been nice to also include a Dragon in the mix as well, to really demonstrate how the Helium differs from it, since all of us have shot on the Dragon before and were relatively familiar with what it was capable of doing. Next time!
Jesus Christ man, what the fuck is wrong with you, haha. There is no "wrong" or "right" way to do cinematography. Brett's choices maybe don't align with your aesthetic tastes but my god, being a condescending prick in full public view is... certainly a choice!
