Are You Filming the Next Great Untold Story? Project Greenlight and Seed&Spark Want You

Join the world's first crowdfunding rally.

If you have a feature documentary in production that follows a story or character that's never been seen before, you could be in for a $20,000 treat.

Project Greenlight Digital Studios and Seed&Spark are partnering for today’s launch of a 60-day crowdfunding rally—the first of its kind—in search of the next great as-yet-untold story. During the rally, filmmakers will crowdfund simultaneously to raise funds and awareness about their projects. The top ten campaigns to receive the most audience support (in the form of followers to their Seed&Spark campaign) will move on to the finals, where a panel of esteemed documentarians will select a winner.

The five judges are Charlotte Cook (film curator, Field of Vision); Lisa Kleiner Chanoff (Co-founder, Catapult Film Fund), Charlie Phillips (Head of Documentary, The Guardian); Perrin Chiles (CEO of Adaptive Studios; Emmy-award winning documentary producer, Autism: The Musical); and Dawn Porter (Trapped, Sundance 2016). The official winner will be announced at the Bright Ideas Launch Party during the Sundance NEXT FEST in early August.

In addition to providing $20,000 in finishing funds, PGLDS and Seed&Spark will also help power the marketing engine for the release of the film.

"What's thrilling about a crowdfunding rally is that the worst that can happen to a project is they raise money and audience for the next phase of their project's growth," says Seed&Spark’s Emily Best.  "In conjunction with Project Greenlight Digital Studios, we're able to offer a chance for these films to gather steam together—hopefully bringing many more projects to the screen beyond just this rally's winner."

Specifications:

  • Campaigns launch May 1 - June 1 and must run for 30 days, ending by June 30
  • You must raise at least $10,000
  • You must gather at least 500 followers (not all of whom have to donate money)

If this sounds like a lot of work, do not despair: Seed&Spark will provide you with the necessary tools and expertise to run a successful crowdfunding campaign, such as online video tutorials and personalized feedback for each participating project.

I wish I had skills to work with them. This is actually my dream. Maybe one day!

Correction, it's 500 followers, not 5,000.

Also, Seed And Spark, are there opportunities for the other finalists? I find there is always one major winner who seems to have an inside track (or popularity contest), and the other solid projects are left behind. Any thoughts in plugging in multiple worthy projects?

A couple things:
1. The worst thing that happens is that you raise money and gather audience for your film (that's win #1).
2. If you reach 500 followers, you get the filmmaker gift box (worth over $8000 in tech, supplies, and support), and you qualify to leverage our distribution pipeline to 100M homes for your DIY distribution.
3. All the finalists get in front of the incredible judges
4. If you are willing to trust me on this: we're not providing any inside tracks. The finalists are determined by who gathers the largest audience. so YOU are in charge of making it to the finals! Please reach out to us with further questions.

Thanks for your thoughts Emily. Is there a good email to connect with you to voice some thoughts in a less public forum?

Perhaps the biggest concern for filmmakers, is I feel we have 1 good shot to raise funds via crowdsourcing, picking the outlet and opportunity is crucial. And for some, including myself, I don't need the funds, I'm looking for the partnerships and council to enter the distribution phase. Each project is so unique, I'm on a journey to find the correct path to give our story the absolute best shot.

Totally understand that this opportunity is best for films that still need to raise funds. However, ALL films need to build audiences, and if you can build audiences while raising some funds that help with marketing and distribution, that's a win no matter what. This contest doesn't tie you to any one path, but provides a really strong framework to find your films' path. Best thing to do would be to send your specific question here: https://www.seedandspark.com/contact-us and we'll direct it to the specific person on our team who can answer it best. The thing is, we're a crowdfunding and distribution platform, and we believe this path is highly effective: learning from your core crowdfunding audience what you need to know to build a really efficient, strategic, profitable distribution plan. That's what we specifically do. If you don't want to make crowdfunding a part of your plan, we're simply not the best partner, and that's totally ok!

Is the submission for crowdfunding rally over? I am from India and working on a good idea under production and was interested in applying.
