While most of us are probably more familiar with the Ki Pro Mini and Ki Pro Quad external recorders from AJA, the Ki Pro Ultra is a rack-mountable version with a slew of features including 4K, UltraHD, 2K, and HD video recording. The Ki Pro Ultra has a built-in HD LCD monitor and supports edit ready Apple ProRes files at 4444, 422 (HQ), 422, 422 (LT), 422 (Proxy) and frame rates up to 4K 60p. 


Now with firmware update v2.0, they've added support for Avid DNxHD giving users more flexibility when it comes to recording and playback.  The Ki Pro Ultra is both portable or fits in a half rack with 2RU high dimensions. 3G-SDI, HDMI, and fiber input and output connectivity provides different workflows and options for both production and post environments. Besides the announcement of DNxHD, AJA says MXF OP-1A wrapper versions of these codecs will be added in an upcoming firmware update.

Ki Pro Ultra v2.0 software now supports:

Avid DNxHD codecs

  • DNxHD 220x
  • DNxHD 145
  • DNxHD 36 (only supported for 1080p formats)

Supported frame rates

  • 1080p 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97
  • 1080i 25, 29.97, 30
  • 1080PsF 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97
  • 720p 50, 59.94, 60

If you're not familiar with the Ki Pro Ultra some key features are:

  • 4K support up to 4096 x 2160p
  • Apple ProRes 4444 codec support at 30fps 
  • Video I/O 3G-SDI, SMPTE-292/296/424, 10-bit
  • Time code support
  • Digital Audio support for 16-channels 

AJA says the latest firmware update will be available soon The Ki Pro Ultra lists for $3,995.
