Kirby Ferguson on Creativity: Nothing is Original, Everything is a Remix. But Does it Really Matter?
Kirby Ferguson made a name for himself with the popular series Everything is a Remix, in which he proposes that everything mankind creates takes inspiration from something that has come before. He gathers a mountain of evidence that backs up this point, and the topics range from simple borrowing to our complex legal system that doesn’t acknowledge the derivative nature of creativity. You thought 240 or 480 frames per second on the FS700 was overkill? This is not an artist’s tool, it’s a scientific tool, but that doesn’t mean the results are any less beautiful. A team at MIT has developed a camera made up of 500 hundred sensors that are triggered at a trillionth of a second delay. The way the camera actually works is rather brilliant (you know, these guys are from MIT), and it’s able to capture photons as they move across a particular space and through different mediums. Though this may be the least amount of direct filmmaking knowledge you may get from this site, I thought it was worth following up with the previous Prometheus TEDTalk. We’ve got three new videos: an official full-length trailer, a Q&A with Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof, and a new viral ad. The Q&A does have some particularly insightful moments that go beyond just the film, but part of the reason I’m sharing this is that on a base level, I really feel that Ridley and his team are now bringing science fiction to even greater heights. TEDTalks are really a fantastic medium to absorb information, because it forces speakers to choose words carefully and be more expressive in their lectures. We’ve covered some good ones, and even some fake ones, but this TEDTalk from Rob Reid attempts to shine a little light on copyright mathematicians and just how…accurate their information might be. Why do videos go viral? The success of the Kony 2012 documentary has a lot of filmmakers and activists pondering this very question. Racking over 50 million views on YouTube since Monday (and over 14 million views on Vimeo) the documentary is the quintessential example of a viral phenomenon. Now, beyond the accuracy of the documentary, or controversies swirling about it, it’s interesting to consider just how and why this video went viral. If you haven’t heard of TEDTalks, we’ve covered quite a few of them here before, but now they’ve got a very special talk from a man named Peter Weyland, who happens to be the CEO of Weyland Industries. This a fictional character, of course, played by Guy Pearce, and it’s part of the marketing campaign for Ridley Scott’s “Alien prequel” Prometheus.
