How Safe Is Your Camera to Cloud Workflow From Hackers?
No matter your budget level, making sure your cloud-based workflow is secure should be a priority.
With Camera to Cloud apps providing an unbroken chain from the camera to the post-production environment, companies need to establish rock-solid security to prevent hackers from gaining access to original camera files, especially when those projects are at risk of being leaked.
To that effect, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has announced an upgraded security initiative, dubbed the Trusted Partner Network (TPN+) platform, to create best practices for keeping those files secure. Both Adobe and Frame.io have signed on as early adopters.
How Secure is Frame.io?
“Frame.io has always made security the cornerstone of its platform since day one,” writes Jason Druss in Frame’s Insider blog post. “That’s why today we’re excited to announce that along with Adobe video cloud services, we are proud early adopters of the TPN+ platform.”
Frame.io already offers the gold standard for online security. Now, as a part of Adobe, the company has been a leader in further developing the standards and practices that have led to a better locked-down camera-to-cloud environment. Moreover, the company has been voluntarily in compliance with the Academy’s TPN standards since 2018.
The TPN+ platform offers an evolved set of requirements and has adopted a Cloud Security Assessment apparatus to identify and audit company network security practices, look for new threats and weaknesses, further guard against leaks, breaches, hacks, and develop swift responses in the event of a breach.

Custom Solution for Custom Problems
The MPAA also offers enhanced training for awareness, preparedness, and infrastructure for a secure environment. This guidance allows for independent and informed decisions on the overall effectiveness of a company's network security needs.
The platform has been custom-built for member companies to manage and communicate content security status, including non-TPN security certificates such as ISO and SOC 2. The MPAA states that the new platform provides “self-serve functionality for Service Providers to communicate their content security status with enhanced visibility while reducing duplicative assessment efforts.”
The program is also tiered to allow content creators from all levels and budgets to partake in online security. In addition to major studios, the MPAA hopes that TPN+ will be adopted by individual contributors, software companies, and post-production companies alike.
“As TPN’s most recent early adopter, Adobe is one step ahead of the game in terms of ensuring the safety and security of content,” says Terri Davies, President of the Trusted Partner Network. “I’m confident that our new TPN+ platform will prove beneficial for Adobe, the Frame.io platform, and its global client base and provide added layers of security to their day-to-day workflows.”
The TPN platform is believed to be the gold standard for online security, particularly for companies who have adopted Frame’s Camera to Cloud workflow for reducing post-production time by sending original camera files up to the cloud for near-instant access. Coupled with a secure communication hub, studios can work in a completely safe environment without fear that sensitive plotlines will be leaked.
The platform utilizes a quiver of online tools, which include watermark IDs, digital rights management encryption, secure sharing, and the management of permissions and tools from end to end. TPN+ will be the framework by which these tools can be developed and deployed, with standards and practices to govern them.

Why Should Everyday Creatives Care?
The existing TPN platform has been adopted by Universal, Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Netflix, Amazon Studios, and Apple. But how does this news affect budget creatives and those not in the studio system?
Keeping your footage safe is paramount, no matter your budget level. Whether you're protecting your project from would-be leakers, those with a score to settle, or just from improper management, having rock-solid security matters. Even if you're making a student film or a project with your buds for the web, cloud-based workflows are the future. At the very least, having an understanding of security protocols and safe image pipeline management will go a long way to making you an asset on bigger projects. Just because the use case may be out of reach for you now doesn't mean it will be in the future.
There’s always someone trying to get past the gatekeepers, and as such, TPN promises to evolve to meet those threats.
Adobe and Frame.io have joined as early adopters for TPN+ is a vote of confidence as the industry moves to the next level of security. With how ubiquitous Adobe products are, creatives should feel safe in knowing their content is safe from those who'd want to take advantage of it, no matter what budget level they're at.
