The American Film Institute always releases a list of what they consider to be the best American movies of the year. In years past, many go on to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

The honorees include 10 films and 10 TV show that AFI deemed "culturally and artistically representative of this year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image."

They also gave an additional honor, called the AFI Special Award, designated for works of excellence that fall outside of AFI Awards' eligibility criteria.

AFI crowns their awards by picking lists like this, and I always make sure to see everything they talk about. There's usually a lot of quality picks.

Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO, said, “AFI AWARDS shines a light upon excellence in storytelling and the collaborators who bring these stories to the screen.
