New Free LUT Color System for DaVinci Resolve, Vegas Pro, and Final Cut Pro X

Recently I've been experimenting with Jacob Balazer's free Logarist LUT system...

www.logarist.com

Which is kind of blowing me away with the results I am getting using several different Sony and Panasonic cameras. The Logarist system is giving me much better color and contrast control compared to other tools I've tried.

It's free, so it's definitely worth checking out.

You can find more info on Logarist in a thread on the Personal-View forum : https://goo.gl/CaSQ8Z

From the webpage:

"Logarist enables the same types of corrections that you can achieve using raw images in Adobe Lightroom, but without the need to shoot in raw, and right inside your video editing application. "

"Logarist is a wide-gamut, high dynamic range, scene-referred tri-stimulus RGB working color space with a uniformly logarithmic opto-electronic transfer function, optimized for 32-bit floating point color correction in video applications."

That is crackpot level nonsense!

Next we are going to hear LUTs will cure the common cold as well!

The thread on Personal-View that I provided the link to references the math and color science research that the Logarist system is based upon. ( it's similar to how the ACES color system works )

Try it for yourself if you are skeptical. I was not expecting much but was was quite surprised at the initial color I was seeing and how much better I could manipulate that color within my editor.

I've tried it with a bunch of cameras that shoot 8-bit footage and one that shoots 10-bit footage and the results were impressive.

I tried to install the color plug in, but they failed to send me a serial number so it can't be installed, what a hassle!

New version for Davinci Resolve that fixes a color mapping bug...

"Logarist 1.2.0 for DaVinci Resolve (Mac and Win) is available now from logarist.com. This version corrects a level mapping bug for S-Log1/2/3. No other camera color spaces were affected by this bug. FCPX and Vegas Pro are unaffected."

the problem is the vision color plug in that has to be installed prior, they didn't send me a required serial number.

The free Vision Color plug-in for Vegas Pro 13 or 14 was a really quick install for me. I had it downloaded, installed and running in about 5 minutes.

In the past I've had problems with some websites sending me activation codes, where the dang codes never showed up. But that all changed when I switched to GMail, where I don't think I've ever had an email not show up. If you're not using Gmail, you might consider setting up a free account for things like this.

Otherwise you should go to the Vision Color website and submit a support ticket to get your problem solved. Here's the Vision Color webpage that has the "Submit Ticket" button on the top right corner of the page : https://visioncolor.zendesk.com/hc/en-us

Last time I tried to download the VisionColor LUT Plugin, the serial number was included in a text file named Serial_Number.txt, inside the plugin .zip file. They didn't e-mail a serial number to me. Did you look inside the plugin .zip file?

Final Cut Pro X users:

I have released Logarist for Final Cut Pro X 1.3.0, with these changes:

* Fixed a level mapping bug for V-Log L and V-Log

* Reduced the number of LUT points, to improve loading times in the mLUT Plugin and to fix out-of-memory conditions (especially for Cinelike D, which used too many points and could experience failures during rendering)

* Added support for Canon C300 Mark II internal XF-AVC recordings made with firmware version 1.0.6. This firmware version incorrectly sets the video_full_range_flag in its internal Canon Log 1/2/3 recordings, which causes levels to be mapped incorrectly in FCPX. For these recordings, use the full_range_flag LUTs, which compensate for the problem.

I've also updated the documentation to note that Final Cut Pro's built-in log processing should be turned off for Canon Log, S-Log, and VariCam V-Log.
