External SSD still get framdedrops in PP CC..

Hi there!

Im editing 4k footage from a Panasonic GH4, the footage is on an external SSD-harddrive from Samsung model: T3 250gb. I still get framedrops and cant play it in full quality without it starting to lagg the f@ck out. Is there something i've missed? I've also tried with a Lacie 500gb 7200rpm and it's even worse..

Computer specs:
2,2 GHz Intel Core i7
16gb Ram
Macbook Pro mid 2015

You will get better performance if you transcode your H.264 footage to a proper editing codec but the bottom line is that your computer is simply too slow.

I do not understand why so many people insist on editing on a laptop instead of a desktop. To edit 4k I would strongly recommend a desktop with a minimum of 32GB.

You seem like the ideal candidate to try out Adobe's new built in proxy workflow. It's in the latest update and you are already paying for it.

Few things: I've never tried editing 4K h.264 on it, but I have the same MBP for remotes and it edits 4K ProRes just fine (I use FCPX). Try transcoding it. I'd also try a better SSD if that doesn't help. However, you can't expect to run at full quality AND apply effects with that computer.

Is your SSD connected to your Macbook Pro using a Thunderbolt 2 connection or is it using a USB3 connection ?

USB3 can lag because it shares it's IO bus with the CPU, while Thunderbolt 2 uses it's own asynchronous bus so it works independently of what's happening with your CPU. Big difference in performance when you need it.

I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro, the first retina model, and cut through 4K GH4 footage all the time like its butter so it's not the laptop. In fact it edits better then some of the £4,000 Windows avid machines at the office.
