DJI Finally Releases the Lightweight Mini SE for $300
After slowly announcing and releasing across international markets, DJI has finally released its tiny new drone in the U.S., the Mini SE.
DJI has marketed this as a camera you’d have lying around your house, meant to capture quick moments and memories.
DJI Mini SE Drone
DJI Mini SE Drone- 3-axis motorized gimbal camera lets you capture aerial 12MP shots and 2.7K Quad HD videos
- Features a Vision Sensor + GPS Precise Hover and a 360-degree propeller guard
- QuickShot modes, including Dronie, Circle, Helix & Rocket allow it to move within a preset motion
- DJI Fly app lets you conveniently view live recordings and access Flight Tutorial
- Long-lasting battery life provides a maximum flight time of approximately 30 minutes
- Gimbal Option: 3-Axis Gimbal
- Configuration: Drone with Camera
DJI listed that the drone is “almost as light as a smartphone” so with that, it hopes people will take this everywhere like they would a small point-and-shoot camera. DJI has also noted that the drone is “exceptionally portable and places it in the lowest and safest weight class of drone” which exempts it from certain regulations in certain countries.
The Mini SE can take 12-megapixel photos, as well as 2.7K Quad HD videos. Just like other DJI drones, the Mini SE comes with the “quickshot” features that have pre-built camera moves, allowing you to film yourself or your subject hands-free as the drone executes “preset motions” like dronie, rocket, circle, and helix.
The drone comes with propeller guards as well, which is standard for DJI, but this feature plus the size and weight only adds to the hope that this drone becomes a regular household item that you can use anywhere.
Plus, DJI is pushing its “Creator Templates” that basically act as filters so people can throw these on the footage they capture. Another move meant to make aerial photography more accessible for non-professionals or inexperienced video editors.
Personally, I think it's a good way to introduce people to the world of video creation. You have to start somewhere!
So, are you going to start seeing these on film or commercial sets? No. But if you’re wanting a lightweight, uncomplicated drone to carry around for personal use, the Mini SE seems to be a solid option.
I think to wrap up what the selling point for this drone is, the answer is simple—it's a small, user-friendly drone that's a good starting point for anyone new to cameras and/or aerial photography.
