Is it weird to connect with on-screen emotional breakdowns, when you generally freeze, sometimes awkwardly cracking a smile, in similar real-life situations?

I’ve always appreciated a scene that takes us into a psychological territory we usually keep locked away. To see a character break down leaves me emotionally exposed. It’s slightly overwhelming in the moment, but honestly, I do not mind sharing that sort of vulnerable relationship with movies.

If you’re anything like me, this list of onscreen breakdowns is just what you need.

So let’s dive right in!

7 Most Realistic Emotional Breakdowns in Movies

1. Wilson Is Lost, Cast Away

Losing Wilson was probably the worst moment of Chuck’s life, since the plane wreck that cast him away on that deserted island. The volleyball was the only thing that prevented him from losing his sanity to the isolation. The fact that Chuck didn’t leave Wilson behind as he set out for civilization on his DIY raft is proof of their connection.

When Wilson is lost at sea, Chuck’s anguished screams of “I’m sorry, Wilson!” transcend drama, capturing the purity of an unconditional friendship between an animate and an inanimate character.

2. E.T. Goes Home, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Young Elliot met E.T. at a time when he was in desperate need of friendship. To be understood telepathically—that’s priceless. Naturally, bidding farewell to a friend so dear is surely heartbreaking, especially when you’re barely 10 years old.

The final farewell scene in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. intimately captures the pain of losing someone with whom you’ve shared an irreplaceable connection. E.T. is not wrong when he says, “I’ll be right here.” He does have a home in Elliot’s heart.

3. Crying Over Spilt Milk, Stand By Me

Rob Reiner’s adaptation of Stephen King's novel features one of the most heartbreaking emotional breakdowns. The narrative follows four pre-teens on their quest to find a missing boy.

In this scene, we hear Chris say he wants to run away to someplace where nobody knows him—a sentiment that is both relatable and painful for me. Especially when he breaks down in tears, all I want to do is give him a bear hug.

4. Wear One Tomorrow, Pursuit of Happyness

Chris has been living on the streets with his son, desperately trying to fulfill his parental duties while battling unemployment. At the brink of despair, he finds himself a job at a stockbroker firm, in an unpaid internship.

On his last day, his boss calls him into the office. Chris is anxious, completely oblivious to the fact that his life will change forever in a few minutes. That day, he walked out of the office with tears in his eyes, with a job that he earned through sheer determination and hard work.

5. “It’s Not Your Fault,” Good Will Hunting

The first step to healing is to stop blaming yourself for all the misery in your life. Unaware of this simple truth, Will is sabotaging the good things in his life by projecting his past trauma. It was a way for him to punish himself for messing up things in his life, or so he believes.

So when Dr. Maguire says, “It’s not your fault,” at first, it feels like mockery to Will. But slowly, he realizes that all the doctor ever wanted was to free him from the captivity of his own mind. Will’s emotional breakdown before Dr. Maguire reflects how the strongest souls are sometimes the most wounded, and a soft touch makes all the difference

6. The Mirror Scene, I, Tonya

Sitting alone before a mirror, getting ready to compete in the Olympics, Tonya knows that while she is competing in one of the most prestigious sports events, she is no longer the promising young skater whom people look up to.

Considering that her ex-husband plotted an attack against her rival, she suddenly finds herself implicated as the mastermind behind the horrific attack.

As she goes on to apply lipstick on her cheeks, she can’t hold it in anymore. She fights her tears. Each time she tries to hold on to a smile, her eyes give her away, and her face crumples as tears fight to escape.

Margot Robbie’s Tonya is priceless in this sequence. Her performance stabs into your heart mercilessly, ensuring that you feel every pang as Tonya.

7. The Argument, Marriage Story

The couple, Charlie and Nicole, are parting ways—in a not-so-amicable way. In this scene, we see exactly how much they have kept buried.

The argument starts with Charlie and Nicole berating each other over their parenting styles, comparing each other to their own toxic parents, which soon escalates to Nicole shunning Charlie for cheating on her, and before long, the hells break loose.

Charlie makes his case to God, citing how his marriage to Nicole was the worst thing that ever happened to him, which led him to cheat. The argument turns nasty, with both calling each other names.

The moment where Charlie yells out in anger that he wishes every day that he wakes up to the news of Nicole’s death, and then immediately breaks down into hysterical crying, is surreal. This particular moment always breaks my heart.

To reach a point like this in your relationship must feel awful. Their apology to each other at the end, as they cling together and cry, is proof that love is indeed a complex emotion.
