How to Use a Light Meter - an Excellent Cinematography Tutorial from Ryan E. Walters

01.3.12 @ 10:18AM Tags : , , ,

This site has covered light meters in the past (here and here), but this video by Ryan E. Walters is too good not to share. In the video, Ryan elucidates very well how and why to use a light meter (his pick: the Sekonic L-758C). People pay good money for tutorials of this caliber, so thanks to Ryan for sharing this video for free. Very helpful stuff for DPs:

More info on Ryan’s site below. But first, a bonus! Here’s his tutorial for lighting a scene at ISO 800 (which is the native ISO of RED cameras, the ARRI ALEXA, and the Sony F3 if I’m not mistaken):

Ryan’s stock footage is available here.

  • good video!

  • Are there any more lightning videos like this anywhere on the web? Someone has some good recommendations? I already saw a bunch of lightning set-ups when it comes to filming an interview of some sort. But I’m really looking for film scenes likes this one.

  • Thanks for another brilliant share– and RW’s site is the bomb. Brilliant. May many eyeballs look that way. Cheers, M

  • Two excellent lighting tutorials by a DP who really knows how to light as well as communicate his working process both technically and aesthetically. Ryan is extremely generous to share such high quality tutorials which take a lot of time and effort to create.

  • priceless information thanks
