John August Throws Screenwriters a Life Ring with Writer Emergency Pack

John August Throws Screenwriters a Life Ring with Writer Emergency Pack
Hey, screenwriters. Ever find yourself stuck in the middle of your screenplay with no idea how to escape this awful mess you have created for yourself? If you haven't, then you're probably not a screenwriter.

Now, what if there was a way to quickly jar you out of your writing stupor and find a new path of yet undiscovered creativity? And what if this solution was as handy as a deck of cards? Behold, the Writer Emergency Pack from John August is now on Kickstarter.

As you can see in the video, Writer Emergency Pack is a simple deck of cards with helpful tips and illustrations that can help a screenwriter think in new ways about a story. It's not a really a trick, just an interesting way to prompt writers with suggestions on how they can approach problems in their screenplays.

I was able to check out a demo deck at the Austin Film Festival during the live Scriptnotes session. I'll admit, I was skeptical at first. Screenwriting solutions in the form of a deck of cards? Sounds gimmicky. So, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Writer Emergency Pack is really just a clever, compact way for John August to share several of the lessons he has learned over the years as a professional screenwriter to overcome many of the common problems screenwriters face. I don't imagine I'll pick a card at random and magically fix my screenplay. Instead, I'll go through the deck all at once for an overview, then come back to the deck when I realize I find myself in a particular situation that August has identified in Writer Emergency Pack.

The Kickstarter for Writer Emergency Pack is already funded, so if you decide to back the project, you're guaranteed to receive your reward. Plus, John August is donating a Writer Emergency Pack to a youth writing organization for every pack backers purchase. Writer Emergency Packs start at $19. But don't wait. The Kickstarter ends on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 3 pm EST/12 pm PST.

I'm so excited to hear about this. I've been listening to his podcast, scriptnotes, for quite a while now. Although I've already learned so much from that podcast, having some tips and exercices writen down just sounds like a dream to me.

I would love to see a film made by shuffling the deck and playing card by card - that would be an interesting plot.
