You Can Now Watch Every Chantal Akerman Film on Hulu Thanks to Criterion

Cinema lost one of its greatest pioneers this week, Chantal Akerman. Even though the celebrated director is no longer with us, Criterion has made her revolutionary work more accessible than ever.

If you haven't had the chance to watch her films, like her masterpiece Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles or Hotel Monterey, you now have the chance to do just that on a platform you probably already subscribe to. To commemorate her life and massive contribution to the medium, Criterion has decided to release all of her films in their collection on Hulu.

Criterion has released 6 of Akerman films:

  • News From Home
  • La Chambre
  • Je Tu Il Elle
  • Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles
  • Hotel Monterey
  • Les Rendez-vous D'Anna

You can access each of her films from the Criterion Collection on Hulu here. (Unfortunately, they're only available in the U.S.)

Chantal Akerman was known for being a rogue filmmaker who defied conventions to create her own brand of cinema. If you're unfamiliar with her work, here are a couple of scenes from her films Jeanne Dielman and Je Tu Il Elle that demonstrate her signature style -- static long takes and sparse editing.
