Sigma Introduces Blazing-Fast 50-100mm f/1.8 Lens, 30mm f/1.4, & MC-11 E-Mount Lens Adapter

Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 Art Lens Large HERO
Sigma has once again redefined how fast and sharp a zoom lens can be.

The engineers over there have done some incredible things, first with the tack sharp APS-C 18-35mm f/1.8, and now with the new APS-C 50-100mm f/1.8. The new 50-100mm f/1.8 — which will come in Canon EF, Nikon F, and Sigma SA mounts — joins the rest of Sigma's high-performing Art lens lineup, and is listed at $1,100. In addition, they've announced another new APS-C lens for their mirrorless line, the 30mm F1.4 DC DN, which will be available in Sony E and MFT mounts, and is listed at $340. Lastly, the previously leaked E-Mount adapter, MC-11, has also been announced, and will cost $250. Unfortunately it seems that it will only work with Sigma lenses out of the gate.

All three of these will be available in the next month or two.

MC-11 Lens Converter

Sigma MC-11 Angle View

The MC-11 lens converter is designed for Sony E-Mount cameras, and though it seems like it's only made to work with Sigma branded lenses, theoretically there is nothing stopping them from developing the tech to work with other brands in the future. Right now the adapter is made to work with Sigma SA and Canon EF mounts, adapted to E-Mount, runs for $250, and will be available at the beginning of April. Here's more from Sigma on the lens adapter:

The Sigma MC-11’s sleek LED display lets Sony users know if the attached Sigma lens is compatible and whether or not the MC-11 needs to be updated for that specific lens. Its internal control data system keeps detailed information on each compatible Sigma lens, automatically optimizing performance of AF drive, aperture control and other critical lens functions. The MC-11’s internal control data system also maintains continuity with key camera functions that control brightness and correct transverse chromatic aberration, distortion, and more. The complete compatibility with both Sigma lens OS and Sony in-camera OS ensures correction of camera shake and other stability issues and when used with in-camera stabilization, MC-11 allows angle shake correction in the lens. The integrated flocking helps prevent internal reflections and reduction in lens performance. In addition, the MC-11 retains important EXIF data ensuring users can analyze every detail of their lens setting.

The Sigma MC-11 converter can be updated with the latest compatible lens information from a workstation or laptop using the Sigma Optimization Pro software and Sigma USB Dock (sold separately).

It should also be mentioned that Sigma offers a lens conversion service, and will convert one Sigma lens mount to another:

Sigma will convert the current mount of your Sigma Global Vision lens to another of your choice. Sigma lenses currently from the Contemporary, Art or Sports line, in Sigma, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax mounts can be converted to Sigma, Canon, Nikon, Sony or Pentax*. Mirorrless lenses can be converted to Micro Four Thirds and Sony-E Mount. They cannot be converted to either an APS-C or a Full Frame format.

I seriously want that 50-100 and then the 18-35 would be the ultimate run and gun combo

Same! It's my workhorse on the GH4 with Speedbooster, I'm always a little disappointed when I have to take it off for my 50 or 85; now I can just carry these two around!

I've got a similar combo. The 35-100mm Lumix 2.8 and it works great! I'd love the extra light of this new lens but it will be hard for me to sell because of the lack of IS. I could definitely live without it but it will be missed if the optics are superior in this lens. Also this looks like it's twice the weight of the 18-35, which is expected for all the additional/up-scaled elements, but will be hard once again for me to let go of my tiny 35-100.

Spot on, Sigma. I took a whole bag of lenses away with me last week and used the 18-35mm for almost every shot.

I'd like to hear more about the shape and number of blades. Couldn't see any info on their site.

A week after getting the 18-35mm, a gust of wind put a few grains of sand inside the lens, which I could feel when focussing. Sigma UK cleaned it up and returned it to me within a week, so support seems very good.

Astounding.... If this is as good as the 18-35 f1.8, there won't be much of a need for primes.

Perfect. I'm buying the 50-100 even before I see testing. I own the 18-35 and love it. I trust this is just as awesome.

Like others, I'm using the Sigma 18-35 and Tokina 11-16 with a SpeedBooster on my GH4, so this 50-100 Sigma would be a logical addition. I currently use the Pany 35-100, which I like very much as its fast enough for most shots, and the stabilization is decent. I want stabilization with any lens over 35mm for hand held shots, but for locked off shots the faster 50-100 would be really nice. If the image quality matches the 18-35, it will be hard to resist buying this.

Here is some night footage of the Sigma 50-100mm on a Panasonic GX85 with IBIS using the Metabones Speedbooster Ultra for Canon mounts. Most scenes use an aperture of f/1.3 and ISO 1000.
